Free Alphabet Books: ABC to Colour; Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Urdu, Arabic and Hiragana Letters to Trace

Our alphabet worksheets for nursery children are free printable PDFs for ages 2–4. They cover English capital letters to colour, plus Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Urdu and Arabic letters and Japanese hiragana to trace and write.

Little children meet letters everywhere: on signs, packets and story books. A relaxed first step is simply to look at one big letter, say its name and colour it in. Tracing and writing can come later, once your child enjoys holding a crayon.

The books: in the trace-and-write books, each page has one big letter to trace, a picture with a word in that language, rows to trace and boxes to write in.

• A to Z Letters: 26 pages, one English capital per page as a big bubble letter to colour. No tracing, no lowercase.
• Indian and regional letters in school chart order, with picture words in that language: Marathi Varnamala: Swar & Vyanjan (51 letters, with ॲ ऑ ळ), Gujarati Kakko: Swar & Vyanjan (49, અ to જ્ઞ), Bangla Barnamala: Swar & Byanjan (50, no ক্ষ), Tamil Ezhuthukkal: Uyir & Mei (31, no uyirmei), Telugu Aksharamala: Achchulu & Hallulu (52, no guninthalu) Malayalam Aksharamala: Swarangal & Vyanjanangal (51, Kerala SCERT Class 1 order, no chillu letters) and Urdu Qaida: Huroof-e-Tahaji (40, ا to ے, Naskh, right to left).

Every book shows "Age 2–4" on the cover and ends with a certificate. Print the A4 PDF (or US Letter in the US and Canada) at 100% scale, in colour or black and white.

Tips: say each letter aloud, start with the letters of your child's name and keep sessions to a page or two. Praise effort, not neatness.

Questions parents ask

Do the English letters have dotted lines to trace?

No. A to Z Letters has bubble capitals to colour. The Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Bangla, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Urdu, Arabic and Hiragana books are the ones with letters to trace and write.

Which Hindi letters are in the Hindi books?

Part 1, Swar, has the vowels अ to औ plus अं and अः (13 letters). Part 2, Vyanjan, has the consonants from क to ह, plus ड़, ढ़, क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र (39 letters). Both have one letter per page.

Are there Marathi, Gujarati, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam alphabet books?

Yes. Marathi Varnamala: Swar & Vyanjan has 51 Marathi letters with Marathi picture words, Gujarati Kakko: Swar & Vyanjan has 49 Gujarati letters with Gujarati picture words, Bangla Barnamala: Swar & Byanjan has 50 Bengali letters with Bengali picture words, Tamil Ezhuthukkal: Uyir & Mei has 31 Tamil letters with Tamil picture words, Telugu Aksharamala: Achchulu & Hallulu has 52 Telugu letters with Telugu picture words, and Malayalam Aksharamala: Swarangal & Vyanjanangal has 51 Malayalam letters with Malayalam picture words. The two Hindi books have Hindi words. Outside India, Arabic Alphabet has the 28 Arabic letters and Hiragana has the 46 basic hiragana. More free books are added regularly.
